Sapient therapy is for adults who want to understand their patterns deeply enough to finally begin choosing differently.
You can understand why you became this version of yourself without being required to remain this version forever.
Your patterns probably make sense. They developed somewhere. They protected something. They helped you survive, connect, avoid, perform, accommodate, achieve, disappear, pursue, detach, or keep the peace. And eventually, some of them stopped working.
Schedule a Discovery CallYou can bring your relationship problem to individual therapy without a partner
You may be trying to make sense of a breakup. Recovering from betrayal. Wondering why you keep choosing versions of the same relationship, dressed up in different faces.
Trying to understand why closeness feels wonderful until, suddenly, it doesn’t. Struggling to establish boundaries. Wondering whether your marriage still fits the person you’ve become. Trying to make sense of your own sexuality. Rebuilding after divorce. Learning how to date again.
Or facing the unnerving midlife realization that a life can look perfectly functional from the outside while something inside you is quietly, insistently asking for change.
Individual therapy gives us room to examine all of it without reducing you to a diagnosis or a tidy list of symptoms.
Therapy may be useful if you’re experiencing…
- Relationship patterns that keep repeating
- Attachment: anxious, avoidant, and disorganized tendencies
- Breakups or divorce
- Infidelity or betrayal
- Sexual shame
- Sexual, relational, or family trauma
- Boundaries
- People-pleasing or over-functioning
- Relationship anxiety
- Difficulty tolerating dependence or closeness
- Major life transitions
- Midlife questions
- Grief and loss
- Mixed feelings about marriage or commitment
- Dating after a long relationship
Or simply: “Why do I keep doing this when I know better?”
Knowing better and being able to behave differently are not the same skill. Therapy works in the space between them.
Insight matters. But insight alone isn’t the assignment
There’s a particular, familiar frustration in understanding yourself well while continuing to reenact exactly the same pattern.
So we’re interested in both. Why does this happen? And: what do you do next time?
Individual therapy can help you recognize your triggers and activations, understand where those responses come from, and expand the range of choices available to you. That may involve examining attachment, family history, trauma, sexuality, beliefs about relationships, shame, defenses, and the stories you’ve inherited about who you’re supposed to be.
But the work always returns to your lived experience.
You’re allowed to want more than symptom reduction
People come to therapy because they’re anxious, or heartbroken, or overwhelmed. But many stay because another question emerges: what would it mean to live differently?
To become better at intimacy. To know yourself sexually. To stop outsourcing your worth to another person. To tolerate uncertainty. To become more honest. To risk wanting something, out loud. To recognize when a relationship requires repair, and when it requires an ending.
Therapy can be a place for suffering. It can also be a place where you build the foundation of the life you want to be living.
A therapist who specializes in relationships and sexuality
Christopher Frier Brown, LCSW-S, CST is an AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 20 years of clinical experience. His approach is warm and direct; he’s curious but not passive. He asks the hard questions that get to the core of the issue.
His work focuses particularly on the places where individual psychology meets intimate relationships: attachment, sex, betrayal, desire, trauma, relationship structure, rupture, repair, and the major transitions of adult life.

In person in the East Bay. By telehealth in California, Colorado, and Texas.
Not sure it’s a fit?
If you’re outside those states, or looking specifically for skills-focused work around sexuality, pleasure, or relationships rather than psychotherapy, Sapient can also help determine whether Sex Coaching with Andrea might be the better fit.
You don’t need a perfectly organized explanation of what’s wrong.
That’s never been a prerequisite for therapy. Schedule a discovery call, tell us what brings you here, and we’ll determine together whether working together makes sense.
